j+d’s FGH (fave grubs hitlist) #1: chicken rice!

FGH is juicy n delicious’ hitlist of e best food finds in singapore. each time we’ll feature one dish – and search for the top 3 digs that serve it up.

we thought long n hard about which to pick for our first FGH feature, ’til we chanced upon a recent hitwise report, which states that chicken rice continues to be the top searched food term in singapore into 2009. DOH!

we may not have a national dish, but i’m sure most of us would agree that chicken rice is as close as it gets. someone i once met said ‘every singaporean has at least one chicken rice haunt they call their own’. true that. n every foreigner knows it’s one of the must-eats in our little island.

title or description

juicy n delicious did a quick poll with a coupla foodie friends n were surprised at the diverse range n locations of their fave chicken rice joints!

delicious says yeo keng nam, i say wee nam kee, others say five star hainanese @ river valley, lucky chicken rice @ lucky plaza, boon tong kee @ balestier, to name a few. some even agree with anthony bourdain’s choice – tian tian chicken rice @ maxwell market.

delicious n i have an uphill task here. so what we’ll do is consolidate the top 5 voted digs, n then go out for a taste test to narrow it down!

so, we need your help. what is YOUR favourite chicken rice joint?

I can’t remember the name of the place at Far East, the one on the fifth (?) floor. But I swear, they’ve got heroin laced in the chicken ’cause every time I’m in the area, I’m a-jonesin’ for a serving.

  5. u know, i think it’s literally called far east plaza chicken rice. i think every one in our generation has been addicted to that one at some point!

  6. ooh nam kee. first vote for this one!

  7. More votes off facebook

Some foodies have been having trouble logging in to LJ to cast their votes, so here’s the consolidated list off Facebook:
Daniel – Delicious Boneless Chicken Rice at Katong Shopping Centre
Keith – chicken rice from Commonwealth market @ Margaret Drive
Theron – The Blachan Grill in LA (sorry T, don’t think you qualify this time round!)
Pariya – Beach Road Hawker Centre for super soft, super oily chicken with POWERFUL chilli sauce
Rosemary – The coffee shop at the corner of Eng Watt Road, Tiong Bahru – die die must try apparently!
Serene Chan – CR from the Mercedes Benz driving hawker at ABC Market, behind IKEA!

Interestingly enough, most of the folks who shared their thoughts are based overseas, shows you that the appeal of chicken rice never really fades.

  9. ka wei’s cravin’

Sin Kee Chicken Rice at Mei Ling Street.

The good: Their rice is fragrant and suitably moist. Chicken’s always tender (and you know only soft foods do it for me). Oh and they have the chicken feet skin thingy which is always sold out. Oh and get a bowl of their plain porridge. It’s got the viscous consistency of nestum with the fragrace of chicky rice!

The bad: They are not available till probably May 09 – they’ve been holidaying or something since April 08 cos the food centre’s undergoing some refurbishment. in the interim, I get my chicken lice fix from a stall in the food market at telok blangah rise. A pack of rice goes for 30cents, half chicken at $10. And all the ginger you want. Yums. A Jap fren wants me to get a pack (he tried it last time when he came by) when I go visit Fukuoka some time this year.

J&D, any suggestions on how to courier chicken lice to Japan?

    • Re: ka wei’s cravin’

couriering chicken lice to Japan… mmm this is a tricky one. What about… getting a pack from the food market, repackaging in a plastic box, wrapping that with foil, placing it in a ziplock bag and then deep freezing it?
you can then pack it with dry ice in a freezer bag from carrefour… and Bob’s your uncle!

      Whaddya think?
