an ode to the watermelon

it’s too darn hot in singapore these days n yet too darn dry indoors ‘cos of the relentless air-conditioning. the watermelon is a fruit i’m increasingly turning to as a source of respite from the perpetual heat n thirst. there’s nothing like munching on a bowl of frozen watermelon slices while watching tv, or treating yourself to a sweet watermelon smoothie.

some interesting facts about the fruit:
1. china is the largest producer of watermelon today, although it is believed to have originated in egypt
2. in japan, farmers of the zentsuji region found a way to grow cubic watermelons, by growing the fruits in glass boxes and letting them naturally assume the shape of the receptacle
3. the watermelon is 92 percent water by weight, and contains about six percent sugar
4. the watermelon COULD have viagra-like effects: the citrulline which exists in watermelon (especially in the rind) is a known stimulator of nitric oxide. NO is thought to relax and expand blood vessels, much like the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, and may even increase libido

yesterday, the office devoted our weekly friday dress theme to the watermelon. here’s how our colleagues wore their fruit on their sleeve!
