i think i’ve eaten myself into a complete state of paralysis over the course of this weekend.

it started off with a ridiculous deepavali feast at the boyfriend’s place yesterday for lunch, featuring his mother’s amazing lamb and chicken curries, sambal prawns, cucumber yoghurt salad, home-made masala tea (which in itself is reason enough to go out with him) n cookies/sweets.

i staggered home n went straight to bed for an afternoon nap. then i somehow managed to drag myself out of bed n met some friends for dinner at the soup restaurant. of course i couldn’t stomach more than a black chicken soup while the others gorged on a six-course meal, but i have to say the location at DFS galleria (scottswalk) is pretty cool for a chill-out dinner. it’s got a pseudo ‘outdoor’ garden area which feels like you’re dining beneath the night sky except it’s covered n air-conditioned.

n today i checked out the launch of huber’s butchery & bistro at dempsey n wasted no time heading for the queues for free swiss beers n signature huber’s sausages. the store was pretty impressive – great range of olive oils, sauces, pastas, meats (of course), breads, n the list goes on. my very mature boyfriend tweeted this picture which was the highlight of his visit to huber’s today.

afternoon snack consisted of more beers and wedges with chilli crab dip at muddy murphy’s. it’s interesting how this is the fourth expat bar i’ve been to recently that features chilli crab dip on its snack menu. the others served it with fried mantou buns – a much better pairing than wedges anytime.

n the final blow which rendered me comatose n lying in bed writing this entry was yet another nutso dinner at the smith street food centre. we had steamed fish head with bean paste sauce, claypot chicken rice with salted fish, oyster omelette, watercress soup and minced pork with ginger. i’m not a huge fish fan but my dinner mates were raving about the fish head. it’s got an interesting taste i’ll admit – a combination of the bean paste n a sort of plum sauce which gives it an almost sweet and sour flavour. unfortunately no pictures of this one!

on a reel note, i caught julie & julia last night. it’s a movie based on two true stories – one of julia child, american TV chef and author and the other of julie powell, a writer who blogged about cooking thru’ julia child’s cookbook ‘mastering the art of french cooking’ – over 500 recipes in 365 days.

it was a thoroughly enjoyable movie, thanks to meryl streep’s hilarious and entertaining impersonation of the late julia child. that woman is brilliant in ANY ROLE. amazing. the film also made me want to go home and start cooking (or at least learn how to).

i went home n started reading julie powell’s blog from the first entry n i have to say… while meryl streep did a brilliant take on julia child’s persona, i found a huge disconnect with amy adam’s portrayal of julie powell vs how the writer comes across in reality. i actually prefer the real julie powell who’s witty, sarcastic n fun. the julie powell in the movie was just way too saccharine sweet.

in any case, it’s worth a watch especially if you’re 1) a meryl streep fan and 2) love cooking.
